Her time working in the environmental non-profit field led her to a venture. Brittany Chamberlin looked at the way toxins affect the environment, but when she started to understand how toxins affect humans, she got a wake-up call. “I realized that what we put on our bodies is just as important as what we put in our bodies. Shockingly, many everyday beauty products go unregulated. ” She discovered that children’s products are some of the most toxic products on the market.
Taking on-line courses and workshops, Brittany became a self taught chemist and began to create her own whipped body butters and hand creams using ingredients sourced in the US. “My first product was a lavender face cream that was ultra rich for the winter months. I used it myself and gave it as gifts to friends and family.” The cream was an instant hit and Brittany realized she might be able to make a business out of her new found passion and chemistry project.
Brittany read everything she could on non-toxic skin care, followed multiple blogs on the subject and consulted with experts in the field. Through this research, she decided to get her product independently tested to confirm it’s authentic environmentally safe status. And it was. All of her products are hand crafted and contain certified organic butters, exotic and essential oils.
For the first couple of years , Brittany supplied her whipped body butters to a small test market to understand the needs of her customers. She was then ready to branch out and Bodha Skin was formed. “Bodha is the Sanskrit word meaning knowledge and understanding. “My goal is to help customers understand the benefits of using chemical free products for their entire family. I have learned that 80% of what we put on our skin can be absorbed into your bloodstream and the average woman applies 10 – 15 products per day.”
In December of 2012, Brittany began to showcase and sell her skin care line at farmer’s markets, craft fairs and on the web. She began to use social media to provide more information for her customer base. The Bodha Skin line includes Whipped Chocolate Body Mouse (ideal for a pregnant belly), Whipped Lemongrass Body Butter, and Mango Butter Hand Salve. For babies she offers a Chamomile and Lavender Whipped Baby Butter.
Brittany is focusing on education through her blog and would love to see her line in stores everywhere. With a two year old and one on the way, she is managing the growth of her small company but can foresee a future with her whipped body butters being found in homes everywhere.
