Featured VentureMom – Jenefer Kay – OSEA

Jenefer Palmer Kay, founder of OSEA, built one of the original clean beauty brands long before “clean skincare” became an industry trend. Rooted in the healing power of the sea and inspired by generations of women in her family, OSEA’s story is one of intuition, wellness, persistence, and purpose.

The family’s connection to the ocean dates back more than 100 years.

In the 1920s, Jenefer’s grandmother Elsa — one of the first female chiropractors in the United States — discovered the healing powers of seaweed and the ocean after suffering a debilitating injury that left her bedridden. Elsa believed the minerals and nutrients found in seawater restored her health. She became so devoted to the healing benefits of the ocean that she started the first Polar Bear Club in New York, swimming in the Long Island Sound more than 300 days a year.

That philosophy of wellness and connection to nature was passed down through generations of women in the family.

In 1982, Jenefer moved to Orcas Island, Washington to raise her family in an intentional community focused on holistic living. There, she immersed herself in healing arts including shiatsu, polarity therapy, and biodynamic craniosacral therapy. That same year, she became Spa Director at Murrieta Hot Springs, one of Southern California’s earliest wellness spas.

Unable to find clean skincare products that met her standards, Jenefer started creating her own formulas. In 1983, she developed what would eventually become OSEA’s first product: Essential Hydrating Oil.

After Murrieta Hot Springs was sold in 1987, Jenefer dedicated herself fully to seaweed-infused skincare. Her bathtub became a seaweed storage facility and her kitchen transformed into a laboratory. Throughout the 1990s, she immersed herself in the study of cosmetic chemistry, spending years perfecting formulations rooted in wellness, efficacy, and naturally derived ingredients.

In 1996, OSEA officially launched at Fred Segal on Melrose in Los Angeles.

Two years later, Jenefer’s daughter Melissa officially joined the company, and together the mother-daughter team began building the business out of their garage. What started as a deeply personal passion project slowly evolved into one of the most respected family-run clean beauty brands in the country.

From the beginning, OSEA committed to being vegan and cruelty-free. In 2000, the company became Vegan Certified by PETA and Cruelty Free-certified by Leaping Bunny. Their dedication to clean ingredients and transparency also led Jenefer to become an advocate for safer cosmetics regulation. In 2004, she testified before the California State Assembly alongside the Environmental Working Group in support of the Safe Cosmetics Act and became the first company to sign the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

As the brand grew, so did its impact.

In 2002, OSEA launched its first spa partnership with the Four Seasons Maui. In 2005, the company began sustainably sourcing seaweed from Patagonia, where they developed proprietary seaweed-based ingredients that became the foundation of the brand.

One of those products — the now cult-favorite Undaria Algae™ Body Oil introduced in 2010 — remains OSEA’s number one bestseller today.

Under Melissa’s leadership as CEO beginning in 2016, the company experienced rapid growth, expanded its social media presence, opened its first skincare studio in Venice, California, and launched into Ulta Beauty as part of its Conscious Beauty initiative.

Today, OSEA continues to earn industry recognition, including multiple Allure Best of Beauty awards, while remaining grounded in the same values it was founded on decades ago: wellness, sustainability, family, and the healing power of the sea.

What makes OSEA especially inspiring is that it wasn’t born in a boardroom or built around a trend. It was created by women who believed in the restorative power of nature and spent decades turning that belief into a purpose-driven business that continues to thrive today
