Featured VentureMom – Liz Joy, Founder of Marea

Liz Joy started with a sketch of a dress, no investors, and no connections in the fashion industry. Today, she’s the founder of Marea, a growing fashion brand carried by more than 150 retail partners.

What began as a creative idea has become a business built around beautiful clothing, effortless style, and a community of women who want to feel confident in what they wear.

Before launching Marea in 2022, Liz had built a loyal following through her lifestyle blog, Pure Joy Home, where she shared her love of fashion, home, and family. As a mother and entrepreneur, she had developed a strong connection with women who appreciated her approachable style and trusted her recommendations.

But Liz wanted to create something of her own.

With no formal fashion industry background or outside investors, she took a leap and launched Marea by Liz Joy. Her vision was to create timeless, feminine clothing that felt special but was easy to wear—pieces women could reach for again and again.

What makes Liz’s entrepreneurial journey particularly inspiring is how she turned the community she had already built into the foundation of her business. Rather than simply designing clothes and hoping women would buy them, she listened to what her followers wanted. Their feedback helped shape her collections, creating a brand that feels personal and connected to its customers.

Liz also understood the power of social media. Years of sharing her life and style had given her something many new businesses struggle to develop: an authentic relationship with her audience. When she introduced Marea, she wasn’t starting from scratch. She had a community of women who were excited to support her next chapter.

As the business grew, Marea expanded beyond direct-to-consumer sales into wholesale partnerships, reaching more than 150 retailers. What started with a single sketch was becoming a recognizable fashion brand.

And Liz has been thoughtful about how the company grows. Marea focuses on small-batch collections to help avoid overproduction, reuses fabric where possible, and makes conscious decisions about packaging and shipping. For Liz, building a successful company also means building one that reflects her values.

Perhaps the most interesting part of Liz’s story is that she didn’t wait until she had all the answers. She didn’t have a fashion degree, industry connections, or a large investment behind her. She had a creative idea, an understanding of her customer, and the confidence to begin.

Today, Marea is more than a clothing line. It’s an example of how a woman can turn her personal interests, creativity, and community into a business of her own.

Liz’s journey is proof that sometimes the most valuable asset an entrepreneur has isn’t money or experience. It’s the trust she’s built, the people she connects with, and her willingness to take that first step.
