Teaching, Community, and Joy: The Soundview Mahjong Story
This week’s featured VentureMom is a long time friend of mine, and I love her story of how she became a mahjong teacher. Here it is in her own words.
How did you come up with this idea?
My dear friend of 30 years, Gretchen Robards, who started South Shore Mahjong in Massachusetts, has been not so gently nudging me for the last few years to start teaching. This year, she finally wore me down—and I’m so glad she did!
Why is it something you want to do and enjoy?
I absolutely fell in love with mahjong. I’m honestly surprised by how much joy I get from teaching it to others. It’s a game with such a rich history—fun, social, and fantastic for brain health.
How did you get started?
With a lot of encouragement from my mentor, I took the leap. I got certified through Oh My Mahjong, came up with my name and logo, and announced on social media that I was ready to roll. Then I held my breath… until my first paying clients came along!
How did you come up with your name?
I’ve lived most of my life near Long Island Sound and wanted to weave my love of the Sound into my business. I pictured mahjong games by the beach or overlooking the water, and Soundview Mahjong just felt right.
Who was your first client?
My amazing sister-in-law and three of her friends were my very first students!
How did that make you feel?
Hooked! Seeing the moment when all the quirky rules and strategies of mahjong click for someone is pure magic for them and for me.
How are you growing your business?
Right now, it’s mostly word of mouth—but I also post regularly on Instagram @Soundview_Mahjong: fun videos, lesson updates, and little mahjong tricks and tips to keep the excitement going.
What do you see for the future?
I’d love to see mahjong continue to grow. It’s a game for everyone and can connect generations. I just launched the Soundview Mahjong League, meeting Wednesdays at Ox Ridge Riding & Racquet Club in Darien starting September 10th and running through October 15th. I am hoping to bring players together—especially those who don’t yet have a regular group. My goal is to build a strong, welcoming mahjong community.
How does it make you feel to have your own business?
Proud! Taking the leap was scary, but it’s turned into something truly special. I love what I do, and I’m so grateful to the community for embracing Soundview Mahjong.
What’s the best thing about it?
Hands down—the people. I’ve reconnected with friends I haven’t seen in years and met so many wonderful new faces from all generations. It’s amazing.

VentureMom Tip: Say yes to the nudge. Sometimes it takes a friend—or a little outside encouragement—to push you toward something you were meant to do. Don’t ignore those gentle (or not-so-gentle!) pushes; they could be pointing you straight to your next big venture.
