Wanting to make something special for her sister’s 13th birthday, Beatrice Karp has an idea. This ten year old and her next door neighbor and best friend, Annie Whittemore wanted to shape a screen to create an earring holder. With her mom’s suggestion and help, she found that if she replaced the glass in a frame with the screen, their earring holder could stand on a dresser. Painting the frame, a product was born.
Her sister loved the gift and other friends and family wanted this special creation as well. Pairing the holder with a small picture frame to match, these two girls had a venture. With leftover paints from various rooms in her house, and old frames found at tag sales and on clearance, Beatrice and Annie painted frames and experimented with different decorations. She crafted a white frame with sparkle and glitter, a beach frame with sand and shells and frames to coordinate with clients’ bedding.
Setting up a workshop in Beatrice’s basement, Annie could walk over at any time to get the “factory” up and running. Since January, these two VentureKids have had multiple orders and even showcased their earring holders and frames at their school fundraiser. A booth, called “Made by Me” was set up to raise money for the school and their frames were best sellers.
Beatrice says, “I feel like it’s a big accomplishment. Not many of my friends have jobs and it feels good to make money to save for my future life.” Selling the frames and earring holders for between $2 and $5, these two 10 year olds are on their way to big things. “I feel really proud and I think my mom is too.”
